Following the Rules of the Road in the USA

The USA offers a diverse and interesting landscape in which to travel. Therefore, you want to make sure that you are well-prepared when you set out on an excursion in a campervan or vehicle. If you plan to take to the road, be prepared to drive on the right-hand side of the highway.

You Must Be 21 in Order to Rent a Car

Also, the driving age in the USA is 16 years of age in many states. However, if you rent a campervan or car, you must be at least 21 years old in order to drive a rental vehicle. Rental car agencies also usually do not set a maximum age for driving. No extra fee is charged either for people who are younger who rent a car.

How to Travel with Younger Children

All the states in the USA require that drivers use their seat belts when they are driving. Passengers must follow the rule as well. If you are travelling with a child, he or she must sit in a harnessed or booster seat. Normally, rental car agencies provide this type of safety seat to drivers. Babies are never placed in the front seat of the vehicle.

Slow Down and Give the Right of Way to Emergency Vehicles

When you are travelling through the USA, as you would anywhere, make sure that you drive defensively. That means that you need to take extra precautions when you are navigating the roads. Be on the alert in regards to the moves made by other drivers. If you see or hear an emergency vehicle, slow down immediately. An emergency vehicle always has the right of way. Not only must you pay attention to the lights of the police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances but you also must pay attention to vehicles that tow cars as well.

Can You Get Through the Drive-Thru?

As crazy as it may sound, you also have to be careful when you enter the drive-up lane at certain fast food establishments. Make sure that you can meet the clearance requirements if you rent campervan vehicles. For instance, some penthouse vans are 8’3” in height and some of the flat-top campervans are as tall as 7’.

So, make sure you that have enough clearance when picking up food at a fast food establishment. If you cannot meet the clearance, you will have to go inside the restaurant instead. You may have to pay some extra charges if you get stuck in a drive-thru lane. Therefore, you need to be careful in this respect.

Pay Before Pumping Your Gas

If you stop to get gas, take note of the fact that drivers are expected to pay before they pump their gas. On some pumps, you can pay with your credit card so it is a fairly easy process. At other pumps, you need to go inside the store and pay the cashier.

In the USA, you should never block an intersection when you are in the middle of traffic. If you make this mistake, you may be presented with a ticket from the local police. Therefore, it pays, literally, to pay attention when you find yourself caught in a traffic jam.

Because travelling some roads in the USA can be perplexing, it is always a good idea to have a GPS in tow. That will give you the confidence that you need to arrive at your destination more easily without undue worry and stress.
